How to Install Driveway Drainage Properly
Water sitting at the garage door after a Queensland downpour is more than an inconvenience. It can make the driveway slippery, stain decorative concrete, wash material from joints and direct water towards areas where it does not belong. Knowing how to install driveway drainage starts with understanding where water naturally travels across your block, then giving it a controlled path away from the driveway and home.
A well-planned drainage system protects the concrete finish as well as the structure beneath it. The right approach depends on the driveway slope, soil conditions, roof runoff, street level and the amount of water the site receives during heavy rain. For new concrete work, drainage should be designed before the slab is formed and poured. Retrofitting is possible, but it usually requires cutting and reinstating sections of the existing surface.
Start with the driveway fall
The most reliable drainage system begins with the concrete itself. A driveway needs a deliberate fall so water moves across the surface rather than forming puddles. In many residential settings, this means grading the concrete away from the house and towards a suitable collection point, such as a channel drain, grated pit or approved stormwater connection.
The exact fall must suit the site. Too little slope can leave standing water, particularly on flatter driveways or textured finishes. Too much slope can make vehicle access awkward and send runoff towards the footpath or neighbouring property too quickly. Driveway levels also need to work with the garage threshold, existing paths, retaining walls and street kerb.

Spoon drains and swales
A spoon drain is a shallow, shaped channel formed into the concrete surface. It guides water across the driveway towards a pit or legal discharge point. It can be useful on larger sites where drainage needs to travel alongside a driveway, though it must be carefully shaped so it remains practical for vehicles and does not create a trip hazard.
How to install driveway drainage step by step
Installing drainage is a precision job. The drainage line must sit at the correct level, the pipework needs adequate fall, and the concrete needs to be finished neatly around the grate. For drainage connected to stormwater infrastructure, it is wise to involve an experienced concreting contractor and, where required, a licensed plumber.
Set out levels before digging
Mark the driveway edges, garage line, drainage location and outlet point. Use string lines, a laser level or similar levelling equipment to establish the finished concrete height and intended falls. This step prevents a common problem: installing a drain that looks level but sits slightly too high, causing water to bypass it.
The channel grate should generally finish flush with, or fractionally below, the adjacent concrete. If it is proud of the surface, vehicle tyres can catch it and water may run around the sides. If it sits too low, it can create an uncomfortable bump and collect debris.
Excavate the trench and prepare the base
Excavate the driveway area and the trench for the drain or pipework. Remove soft material and compact the sub-base thoroughly. The base beneath the drainage channel is just as important as the base beneath the driveway. Movement in this area can crack the concrete or cause the grate to shift out of level.
Install a firm bedding layer suitable for the drainage system being used. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for channel support and concrete encasement. Heavier vehicles, commercial accessways and wide driveways may require a stronger system than a standard residential installation.
Install the drainage channel and outlet pipe
Position the channel drain in the trench at the designed level, checking its alignment and fall as each section is fitted. Secure the components so they cannot move during the concrete pour. Connect the outlet to appropriately sized stormwater pipework, with enough gradient for water to drain freely.
The outlet must lead to a lawful and suitable destination. Do not direct driveway runoff towards a neighbour, under a building, or onto an area that will simply send water back to the driveway. Local requirements can apply to stormwater connections, kerb discharge and on-site detention, so confirm the solution before work proceeds.
Reinforce and pour the concrete around it
Once the drainage system is secure, install reinforcement and formwork for the driveway. The reinforcement should be correctly supported and detailed around the drain rather than cut or displaced without consideration. Concrete is then placed, compacted and finished to the planned falls.
This stage needs close attention. The concrete on both sides of a channel drain must be finished cleanly to the grate edge, with no hollows that trap water. Control joints also need to be planned so cracking is managed and the drainage channel is not weakened by poor joint placement.
Cure the concrete and test the system
Allow the concrete to cure in line with the project requirements before putting it into service. Once practical, test the drainage with a hose to confirm water flows towards the collection point, enters the grate and clears through the outlet. Testing is simple, but it can reveal issues early, before landscaping or final site works make adjustments more difficult.
Avoid the drainage mistakes that cause repeat problems
The most frequent issue is treating the drain as an add-on rather than part of the driveway design. A channel drain cannot compensate for a slab that falls in the wrong direction. Likewise, installing a small outlet on a driveway exposed to heavy runoff can lead to water overtopping the channel during major storms.
Blocked grates are another avoidable problem. Leaves, soil, lawn clippings and loose gravel can reduce water flow, especially where the driveway sits below gardens or large trees. Choose a grate that suits the expected traffic and debris, and make sure it can be removed for cleaning.
It is also worth considering the finish of the surrounding concrete. Exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and stamped surfaces can all work successfully with drainage, but the finished levels must be controlled carefully.
